Hoops,

I'm looking for a backup PF and noticed that Othella Harrington has been putting up good numbers early. Do you expect this to continue or should I look elsewhere?

Jason

I expect this to continue even after Grant Long returns. I highly recommend you add Othella to your team.

Hoops,

The subscription is great! I need your advice quickly..... I want to trade Francis, Brand, Jim Jackson for David Robinson, Penny Hardaway,Nick Anderson. I need fg% and blocks. You said Jackson might have bad knees and Brand does not play alot of games in the next month. I have Hill and Williams for assts. My team is Hill, Carter, Phills, Brand, Feick, Hughes, Francis, J Williams, Maxwell, Strickland, Camby, Battie, DeClerq, Best, McCoy. He needs pts and some assists and I want better fg%,consistency with Hardaway and games played. Let me know your thoughts.

THANKS,
SCOTT

I like the trade for you although Robinson is an injury risk. I would be surprised if this guy accepts. I would cut McCoy and Battie and go fishing for what you need on the free agent wire.

Hoops,

I have 4 guards in my fantasyteam, but none of them seem to be too reliable. My guards consist of D. Wesley, B. Knight, S. Francis and M. Bibby. Who do you think will end up with the best stats and who do you think I should trade away if possible? I have also been offered A. Davis in a trade, I've seen his season averages so far, they're ok. But what worries me are his inconsistency and somewhat declining stats, how do you think this guy will develop this year?

Thanks in advance,
Tannie

Would hang on to Francis and Wesley. Knight is a good guy to shop since his playing time is threatened by Andre Miller. At this time Bibby's value is low - you should wait for his game to improve. A. Davis is erratic but I think he should do OK. blocking.

11/28/99

Hoops,

I want to trade Latrell Sprewell for Dikembe Mutombo. I already have V. Carter, G.Hil, L.Odom, and P. Pierce for small forward-guard type players. Do you think this a good trade and also a fair trade?

Chris

This seems like a fair trade. Make sure you don't need Mutombos shot.

Hoops,

I've just traded B.Phills for J.Smith in my league. Smith seems to be turning it around the last two games, do you think this will continue. I was also offered another trade recently, not sure if I should accept. The person anted to give me A.McDyess and L.Hunter for S.Kemp and V.Leonard. I would like to hear your thoughts. One last thing, I currently have T.McGrady on my roster, do you think that his numbers will go up as the season goes on, or is he just a 12pt, 4reb, 2asst player who blocks.

I would take that McDyess trade ASAP. McDyess is better than Kemp and Hunter is better than Lenard. I think by the end of the year McGrady will be exceeding your listed stats but I know its tough to have patience.

Hoops,

How do you feel about a Iverson for Webber trade? How is Iverson's hand doing? In addition to Iverson, I get Cato, he tells me Olajawan is out for 6 weeks and I give up Hornacek. Also, what are you hearing about Keith Van Horne? He has really been stinking up the court? Thanks Hoops

My squad is fluctuating between 3rd and 5th

Bryn

I have not heard when Iverson is coming back - I suspect by Xmas - Cato could be huge with Olajuwon out - or he could stink things up as he did when he started for Barkley. I think Cato though should come through with some shot blocking. Giving up on Hornacek is ok. Go find a promising free agent. Van Horn's last couple games have been sub par but they have been against good teams - Suns/Lakers. He is really a small forward being forced out of position without Williams and Marbury doesn't give him the ball enough where he needs it. The Nets don't like his interior defense but fantasy wise that doesn't matter except that he doesn't block too many shots.

I have been offered Mike Bibby and Baron Davis in return for Brevin Knight and Sean Marion. I also have Jason Williams and Robert Pack on my team, but I have no idea when Pack will play again, and I am in the bottom third in my league in assists. Is this a trade I should make? I also have Kobe on my team. Any word on his return?

Thanks,
Ben

At this time Baron Davis has little fantasy value. For that reason I would not recommend this trade. Bibby has been very shaky this year although last night he did well.

I have a question. When I open up the current player rankings under my league's categories (p, a, r, b, s, 3, fg%, ft made), what does "rotisserie style scoring" mean and how do you derive the number in the "score" category (e.g., for Shaq as of 11/28, he had a ranking of 68.3)? I'd be curious to see what mathematical assumptions you have made.

Love your site,
Eunu Chun

I generally like to keep my rating system somewhat under wraps and hope the first place finishes that result (testimonials) serve as proof as too their accuracy. The score is just a relative number. It is based on a summation of scores for each player in each category. A players output in each category is given a weight which is a function of the stat's frequency and it's value to your rotisserie score (a function of stat distribution - you know - standard deviation stuff).

I will preface this email by stating that for the first time ever I am in first place in my league thanks to your preseason rankings. Our league is 12 teams of 13 players each (10 starters). However, I drafted Cliff Robinson 6th (22 preseason, 106 now), Walt Williams 7th (40 preseason, 121 now), and Byron Russell 8th (44 preseason, 97 now). The rest of my team is Mourning (1), Eddie Jones (2), Kemp (3), Camby (4), Christie (5), and after replacing picks 9-13 with free agents, Jerome Williams, Bob Sura, Kurt Thomas, Vitaly Potapenko, and Jayson Williams. Our league has an A-T category, I am in last place. I am writing it off. (Is there a way to rank players on just the other 7 categories?) I plan to drop Potapenko pick up Elie this week from the free agent wire. All this being said, my questions are many:

(1) How soon will Jayson Williams be back? I hear sometime this month. If this isn't true, should I trade him away?

(2) Are Robinson and Williams complete busts this year and should I drop them for free agents or wait out the storm (will Marion continue to get Robinson's minutes? Will Walt continue to suck wind?)

(3) Camby and Christie seemed to have tapered due to injury (Camby) and reduced minutes (I think, Christie). Is it time to trade them away? (I just turned down an offer on Christie for Elton Brand--I couldn't afford to lose Christie's 3s and steals).

I love the daily Fastbreak's and would appreciate any insight.

William

It is gratifying to hear I contributed to your current first place status - impressive considering you had the misfortune of coming up with some bad apples (as there are hidden every year). This year Walt, Cliff, Byron, Battie, and Hawkings have underachieved. You landed 3 of them! It is common to purge the losers with free agents as you have successfully done. I think it is OK to give up on Walt. No one (including the Rockets) know what happened to his game. Cliff seems to be getting his PT back from rookie phenom Marion.

I think Jayson will be back in Jan but I wouldn't expect much from him. He wont be the Jayson of old (except for his sense of humor.) Would not trade away Camby and Christie while in slumps. Would wait for them to come around (as they will) and then trade. At that time though you will probably want to keep them.

12/2/99

Thanks again for the cheat sheet, it was a great help. As you'll notice I am top heavy at the guard position. But when G. Trent comes back, (hopefully soon?) I should be okay. Who do you think I should axe? I am thinking Russell or Sura. Also do you think Strickland will turn it around, or is he doomed in Wash? Here is the team I drafted:

  • 1-Shareef Abdur-Rahim (7th overall) SF
  • 2-Karl Malone PF
  • 3-Vince Carter SG/SF
  • 4-Darrell Armstrong PG
  • 5-Rod Strickland PG
  • 6-Elden Campbell PF/C
  • 7-Mike Bibby PG
  • 8-Bryon Russell SG/SF
  • 9-Jalen Rose SG/SF
  • 10-Shawn Bradley C
  • 11-Joe Smith SF/PF
  • 12-Bob Sura SG

Added Gary Trent PF after draft, put on IR

Your roster looks good. I would keep Trent on the IR until he is productive and then decide who to axe. I would think Russell but he is not that bad either.

12/2/99

I've been offered a trade. In my league Antonio Davis and Elden Campbell are listed as F/C so are allowed to start at either position. I've got both players and have been alternating them at my starting C position. The trade I've been offered is Ike Austin has been offered to me for either A. Davis or Tracy McGrady. We use the equivalent style scoring with P+A+R+S+B. I realize Austin is currently ranked behind McGrady and Davis but I need help at C, Campbell and Davis aren't cutting it. Do you see Austin picking it up as the season goes on or continuing to be a disappointment? Likewise is Campbell going to continue his so-so season?

Thanks,
Michael

I don't see Austin has having the potential to pass up McGrady or Davis. I realize Campbell has been inconsistent but I think he is a better option than Isaac. I particularly like the upside potential of McGrady. I have Davis on my team and I have been pleased with his performances for the most part.

12/2/99

Hoops,

I noticed Bo Outlaw is coming off the bench now. Trying to win blocks and steals in my league, I needed his contribution in these categories. Is he still fantasy worthy? I can't figure out what Doc Rivers is trying to do with his lineup?

John

Over his past 5 games Bo is getting only 24 mpg and hardly scoring. He has great potential but it's not happening for him this year in Orlando. I would look elsewhere for blocks and steals but keep an eye on Outlaw just in case he gets more time.

12/4/99

I was recently offered E.Jones and McDyess for Cassell and Kemp. Both of my guys are having monster years up to date. I'm hesitant to do it because I'm giving up assists, free throws, rebounds, and a little points, but in eturn I'm getting 3's, steals, and blocks. What do you think about the deal? I was also offered Cliff Robinson and Mobley for McGrady. McGrady seems to be heating it up right now and I'm a little hesitant to give him up. Curious for your thoughts.

Thanks,
Mike

I feel in the long run Eddie is better than Sam (injury risk) and McDyess is better than Kemp. Would take that deal. Would hang on to McGrady - he is heating it up.

12/4/99

Do you have any idea how serious Pack's injury is and how long he will be out?

Thanks,
Justin

Don't know how serious - I read he could be back in a couple days. But Pack is a chronically injured player that really should be avoided.

12/4/99

I have Skinner on my bench. Ratliff is hurt. I have Hill (Tyrone) now. My question is should I add Battie and drop Skinner? Croshere and Farmer are also available. I need players as I have Trent, Ratliff, Christie and Brown who are all banged up at present.

Steve

A little risk involved but I like the Battie for Skinner play right now.
