I am trying to take advantage of the "last 10 games" rankings that you have been publishing lately in formulating trades. I know the answer to this question is specific to each player, but as a general matter would you give more weight to a players "last 10 games" ranking, or to his overall season ranking when assessing relative values for trade purposes? Should you trade for players that have been hot for the last 10 games (and are on a streak), or players that have been in a slump the last 10 games(and are ready to bounce back). In my case, I am looking to trade away Kemp, Van Horn, Rider & Christie for Iverson, G. Robinson, and Coleman.

William

At this time of the year I give more weight to the last ten rankings. Its very tough to get a decent offer when trading for a hot player. I would use the rankings to pick guys who are slumping to get at a discount. The other week Jason Kidd was slumping but you knew he would be back and the rankings probably showed for a while that he was under his typical numbers. The year to date rankings could be used to compare the players overall rank to recent rank to see who is slumping. For a player who's role has not changed much more weight can be given to the YTD ranking. I personally though have almost exclusively been looking at last ten rankings lately.

Any sleepers at the center position that you think might be free agents now but have some potential to develop by the end of the year? Who do you like best as a backup: K. Cato, R. Nesterovic, or B. Reeves?

In this group I like Cato - other long shots include the Orlando guys Amaechi and Doleac (now that Gatling is gone)

What do you think of Andre Miller? Will he have value when Knight and Sura get back on the court. He's been playing terrific ball since they have both been out with injuries. When are Knight and Sura due back? Any possibility of Knight getting traded and handing the pg job over to Miller?

Can you rate this trade for me...

I traded Rahim, Strickland and LaFrentz for Garnett, Christie and Smits. Your thoughts on all my questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

WD

Tough call with Miller, but he has been playing well enough to deserve extra minutes and some feel he may keep the starting job when Knight returns. I think he is worth holding onto although he may end up being towards the end of your roster. I like your trade since you got KG. Dickerson has had some unforeseen impact on the value of Rahim and LaFrentz seems like he disappears when he goes against the bigger centers giving his fantasy teams nothing on some nights.

I just made 2 trades to help my utility positions (3).....I have Marbury, Penny, Pierce, Webber, Shaq as my starters with 3 utility left (either Cliff Robinson, Van Exel, LaFrentz, Jamison, Starks, Wesley, McGrady). I'm very close to first and need help in pts., 3's, and stls. I decided to trade LaFrentz and Jamison for David Robinson and I traded Starks and Wesley for Mashburn.....What do u think?

Trades seem Ok although I am not sure they will make a big improvement in the the categories you indicated. Mashburn gets treys and points but so do Wesley and Starks.

Hi Hoopsklyce,

There were two trades made the other day in our 10-Team League (PTS,FTM,FG%,BLK,STL,AST,REB,PTS). Can you analyze and tell me what you think of these trades?

1. TEAM1 gives Ewing & Jamison to TEAM2 for Grant Hill and Horace Grant

2. TEAM1 gives Derrick Coleman, Mitch Richmond & 2 Free Agent Picks to TEAM2 for Mutombo & Olowokandi

1. Considering that Jamison may be out for awhile I would want to be team 1 (gets Grant Hill) although I doubt Horace Grant will have much value

2. Would like to be team 1 for getting Mutombo who has been great lately. DC has been playing well but he has always been a risky guy to have on your roster. Richmond has been up and down. 'Kandi has his moments but since his main asset is blocking and rebounds and you are getting Mutombo you might want to substitute a player of similar value or immediately trade again.

I need treys and pts. and some ass. stls fgm fg% not much in those 4 cat. because I can go from 5 to 2nd or 1st in all strong in reb. and ok in blks mostly treys and pts. I have Malone, Webber , Ceballos, and Henderson as my forwards. Kidd, Penny, Miller, Stoudamire, Pack, and Larry Hughes. I got offered either Iverson and Houston for Webber straight up? Or Malone and Ceballos for Iverson and Houston and probably Dickerson. But then I would need another forward. Would you also try to move a guard for treys and pts. in a forward. Need your help. Thank you Hoops, trade deadline is coming soon for us .

Iverson and Houston for Webber seems like a good deal that would help your treys and pts. Would need to waive a guy - either Henderson or Pack.

Hello,

I was offered Eddie Jones and Dell Curry for Jerry Stackhouse and Ron Artest. What do you think?

Eddie Jones is better than Jerry Stackhouse but Ron Artest is much better than Dell Curry. Unless you are desperate for Eddie's steals, I think you are justified to negotiate a slight improvement on Dell Curry in the deal. Note that Ron Artest may be somewhat threatened by the arrival of John Starks but I think he should prevail. Artest played limited minutes in the recent Heat game because of a bruise he got in a fall. He should be OK in a couple games.

Because of the trade the other day, involving Kukoc, Hughes, and Starks, I would expect Kukoc's numbers to dip. I have him on my team, and am currently shopping him around. Do you think I should drop him if I get no takers? One person I am thinking of picking up is Hughes. Is that a good idea? Appreciate your response.

Hughes should definitely be picked up immediately but I think Kukoc will settle in with the Sixers and still have decent fantasy value.

Hi Hoops,

I was wondering if you could help me out on this fantasy matter; My team right now consists of Wesley/Bibby/Francis/Hughes/Kukoc/Pierce/GHill/Rahim/Garnett/LaFrentz/ADavis/Olajuwon/Ewing. I have received an offer of Payton/Odom/Mercer for GHill/LaFrentz/Bibby. I have heard from different people that this deal is a o brainer, but I'm not sure. Could you give me your insights on this deal? And how do you think Wesley and Hakeem will do the second half of the season?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

In your deal Hill is comparable to Payton and Bibby is comparable to Odom in terms of overall fantasy value. But LaFrentz is much better than Mercer who I feel will be nearly worthless the remainder of the season in Orlando. Would negotiate an improvement of Mercer. Wesley should be OK, although not great. Would be a little concerned about Hakeems injury potential. Even healthy he is average now.

Hi HoopsKlyce,

I've be offered Lamond Murray for Jahidi White. The owner offering me Lamond Murray has David Robinson and wants Jahidi White for insurance. I currently have Hakeem Olajuwon and Erick Dampier as my centers. What do you think of this trade? He has also offered me Kenny Anderson for Avery Johnson and Jahidi White. Which trade do you like? Also Rodney Rogers has been released in our league. What do you think of Rodney Rogers short term (Phoenix has 5 games next week) and long term. I have a chance at picking him up and releasing George Lynch. I'm concern with Lynch's playing time especially with Kukoc on the team. Which is the better player short and long - Rogers or Lynch?

Here is my roster:

  • G Mike Bibby
  • G Steve Francis
  • G Michael Dickerson
  • G Jimmy Jackson
  • G/F Vince Carter
  • F Shareef Abdur-Rahim
  • F Paul Pierce
  • F Alan Henderson
  • F/C Rasheed Wallace
  • C Hakeem Olajuwon

Reserves:

  • G Brent Barry
  • G Avery Johnson
  • F Dennis Rodman
  • F George Lynch
  • C Erick Dampier
  • C Jahidi White

I like Murray for White. Almost a no brainer. I think Lynch will not have much fantasy value with Kukoc around. Would take Rogers over Lynch short and long term but think that Rogers will be inconsistent at times. You should try to get Barry some PT if you have the trey category.
