THE HOOPSKLYCE FANTASY
HOLE IN THE MIDDLE SQUAD

June 5, 1999

Fantasy leagues that require the center position can be challenging when you miss out on players like Mourning and Shaq. Nothing can be more aggravating than taking a center with just modest expectations but get even less than anticipated. The following players have made the HoopsKlyce Fantasy Hole in the Middle Squad for this past season.

Bryant Reeves - Achieved career lows (4th season) in points, rebounds, blocks, free throw percentage, and field goal percentage. He showed up to camp in such terrible shape he was unable to take the minutes of a starter and came off the bench. After signing a huge contract he was a fantasy and real life disgrace playing only 25 games and then missing the remainder of the season with a sore knee.

Bison Dele -I look at Dele and I see a body that appears to rarely be in a weight room. This could explain why he averaged only 5.6 rebounds and 10.5 points this past season. Someone making his bucks should be able to give his team more than the 24 minutes per game Dele averaged for the Pistons last season.

Isaac Austin -After Austin signed the big contract with the Magic he realized he would never need to work a day again in his life and he started not working right away. Last year ended a streak of seven years where Austin improved his points, rebounds, and block stats. Clearly he is content to just show up and take the money now.

Erick Dampier -Dampier had every reason to step up his play with his contract ready to be renewed but his points, rebound, blocks, and field goal percentage were off from his previous year. Dampier was a huge disappointment to fantasy owners who took him with great expectations.

Michael Olowokondi -You expect the number one overall pick to be able to crack into double digit scoring but this project averaged only 8.8 in his rookie year. To his credit he did get 8 rebounds per game and went through a decent stretch in April before collapsing in the final games in May.

Rick Smits -Smits had one of his lower scoring seasons which hurts his fantasy value greatly since he never has been a great rebounder or shot blocker.

Patrick Ewing -Patrick makes the team since he hurt his fantasy teams by playing only 38 of the 50 games. Although his scoring dropped to 17 ppg that was still better than the majority of centers in the league and when he was on the court he was blocking shots.
