The Monta Ellis Injury: Fantasy
Sleeper Search
September 6, 2008
Monta Ellis' injury to his ankle included a torn deltoid ligament, a
Grade 3 high ankle sprain, and a syndesmosis disruption. Well, that
is quite a mouthful of injuries. He had surgery that was
labeled "successful" similar to just about every other NBA surgery I
have heard reports on. At this time Ellis has a possible
return date close to January 1, 2009 if all goes well.
Marcus Williams will be given the opportunity to take command of the
starting point guard position which is a key ingredient for a career
16 mpg player to be labeled a preseason sleeper. Projecting his
career averages to 32 mpg he can be expect to average 12 points, 6
assists, 1 steal, and 2 treys. The treys in particular could make
him attractive in leagues that consider that category.
As a third year player, it would not be a
surprise to see him exceed those averages as these players typically
realize improvements in their per minute production. Also, his
transition to the more open Golden State offense could be
advantageous for him. Targeting him in the later rounds of drafts is
justified however be prepared for a player who may be a liability in
the field goal percentage category.
