The Fantasy Potential of Brevin Knight
August 17, 2007
The Clippers signed
Brevin Knight after the guard was waived by the Bobcats. The
Clippers had hoped their point guard position would be manned by
Shaun Livingston and
Sam Cassell. But Livingston will likely miss next season with a
serious knee injury.
Using his career averages, Knights assist and
steal per minute averages would project to 7.4 apg and 2.0 spg over
30 minutes. These numbers would have him placed 9th in
the league in assists and 6th in the league in steals
last season. On the Clippers, considering Sam Cassell is in his
late 30’s and not really capable of playing many minutes, it is not
inconceivable that Knight can command nearly 30 mpg. Also note that
over his last three seasons Knight has averaged 31 mpg.
The issue with Knight through his 10-year
career has been his tendency to miss games with injuries. Other
than his rookie season he has not played over 70 games. But seeing
the potential he has in the assist and steal categories, namely the
potential to be a player in the top ten in each, is something a
fantasy manager needs to give heavy weight to. This is something
that only D. Wade, Chris Paul, and Baron Davis could claim last
season.
It is possible that many fantasy managers will
not be aware of the fantasy potential of Knight next season making
him a sleeper candidate in leagues with daily transactions. Perhaps
picking up Knight and Cassell in the later rounds is a strategy that
could pay off particularly if your league has an inactive list.
