Rotoworld Expert League Draft
August 21, 2007
On August 20, 2007, I participated in an Expert League Draft. The
full draft is shown below. The league has 12 teams and 14 players
(start 2 centers). The categories are P, A, R, S, B, 3, FG%, FT%. I
have the following comments on the draft:
- Kevin Garnett went #2 overall which seems
kind of high considering he is now on the same team has Ray Allen
and Paul Pierce. For most leagues, I have Garnett projected to be
an early second round pick.
- Dwayne Wade fell to12th overall
as concerns over his recovery linger.
- Steve Nash and Jason Kidd I felt were
somewhat over-valued. What this effectively does
though is force other managers to essentially over-value the
remaining point guards.
- Al Jefferson was given respect with a 15
overall selection by I think that is a bit too much respect.
- Marcus Camby went 27th overall
which is too high. But I know the manager is the type to work
hard to get replacements during the times when Camby will be hurt.
- Greg Oden went 54th overall which
seems a bit high but considering 2 of 10 players must be centers
it may end up working out OK.
- After his disappointing season, Andrei
Kirilenko fell to 59th. This is a pick that could
really pay dividends. I recommend owners who take him try to add
Paul Millsap in later rounds for insurance.
- Shaq went 63rd overall based on
the strength of his reputation but the owner will likely regret
his selection.
- Morris Peterson was selected 83rd
overall which is a nice recognition of his potential with the
Hornets.
- Rookie Acie Law went 91st
overall. There is a chance he can perform at this level being a
PG in Atl but it would be a very uncommon event for a rookie
drafted this low in the NBA come through with the fantasy value
expected at this position.
- Al Thornton was taken at 125 which is a late
round pick that could pay dividends considering Elton Brands
injury.
- Kendrick Perkins at 146 has the potential to
reward his owner as the starting center for the Celtics.
- Yi Jianlian was taken at 162 which seems
appropriate considering his limbo status. This is a low
investment that could pay off for the owner.
Some brief comments on my selections are as
follows:
Yao Ming He was at the top of the depth chart
and it eased my mind about filling the two starting center positions
for the remainder of the draft. A healthy Ming can have a huge this
season.
Carmelo Anthony Normally I do not like taking
the players whose value comes mostly from points but Anthonys game
is still developing and I could not pass on him at this spot in the
draft.
Vince Carter Took him for similar reasons to
Anthony. He really slipped to be available at this point. Hoping
he can be part of a committee that together holds the fort in the
assist category.
Brandon Roy Skipped down a bit to get Roy as
the point based players were at the top of the chart. It is
possible the reigning rookie of the year can really explode and
along the way help out the assist category.
Ben Gordon Once again could not resist his
fantasy potential despite the fact he is a player whose value is
based on points.
Samuel Dalembert Needed to balance the team
with a player whose value was not based on points and he filled out
the starting center tandem. Thought he was a great fit for the team
and did not drop too far in my depth chart to get him.
Andrei Bargnani Needed to take a forward with
this pick and love his upside.
Randy Foye Another player with huge upside
with KG gone. I am not worried about Telfair.
Paul Millsap A little bit of a risk if
Kirilenko turns it around but he has multi category potential and
can complement the team drafted so far similar to Dalembert.
Jarrett Jack Looking for cheap assists. He
will need to compete with Steve Blake and Rodriquez is not so bad
either.
Hakim Warrick Filling out the roster with a
young player who can contribute some points and rebounds.
Kyle Korver Not too excited about Korver this
year as I feel he has a lot of competition but his price was low.
Travis Outlaw Consider him to have a big
upside if he can win the SF position. He will need to compete with
Martell Webster.
Charlie Bell Solid value with the final
pick. He has the potential to put up some stats when given playing
time.
