Q - I drafted Anfernee Hardway. I cannot drop him and pick someone up according to my league rules. should I drop him making him avail to rest of league and pick someone else up?

A - I would hang in there a little longer. He could be back in a week or two.

  • SF/PF Kendall Gill
  • PF/C Danny Fortson
  • UTIL Cuttino Mobley

A - I would do that trade. Seems like a no brainer to me - Rose should be back soon.

Q - Hey Hoops,

I have been offered Jermaine O'Neal and Jason Terry For Joe Smith and Anfernee Hardaway. The notables currently on my roster are: Guards: Armstrong, Hardaway, Dickerson, Jason Williams Forwards: Brand, Abdur-Rahim, Marion, BWallace I play in scoresheet and seem to be lacking play-making (assists-TO) points. I think both of us would agree that O'Neal and Terry offer a big upside but is it worth giving up Penny? I was thinking that by acquiring O'Neal I could put Marion on the market (while he is hot) and get a star type player. What are your thoughts here? Any advice? I would like to respond to the other owner early today if possible.

Thanks,
Paul Allegrezza

A - This trade boils down to Jermaine O'Neal for Penny. Despite your category need I would be reluctant to pull the trigger for Penny until he is playing given his past history.

Q - Hoops:

In a league with FG%, FT%, Points, Reb, Asst, Blocks, Steals, 3's, and PF (more the better), I have been offered Croshere, Ben Wallace, and A. Daniels, for VanHorne, D. Mason, and C. Crawford.

Pete

A - In this deal I would want to be on the side getting Croshere and company.

Q - I have a chance for picking up Voshon Leonard or Othella Harrington from free agency for my head to head ESPN league. PARSB3 ft% fg%. Do you feel there's anyone worth dropping from my team? I was thinking maybe Gill, but I was still a little undecided.

  • PG Terrell Brandon, Min PG
  • SG Steve Francis, Hou PG,SG
  • SF Vince Carter, Tor SG,SF
  • PF Antonio Davis, Tor PF,C
  • C Vlade Divac, Sac
  • Predrag Stojakovic, Sac SG,SF
  • SG/SF Tracy McGrady, Orl SG,SF
  • SF/PF Kendall Gill, NJ SG,SF
  • PF/C Danny Fortson, GS PF
  • UTIL Cuttino Mobley, Hou PG,SG
  • Bench Shawn Marion, Pho SF
  • Bench Theo Ratliff, Phi PF,C

A - If you need reb and fg% help you would be justified to drop Gill for Harrington.

Q - I am off to a rough start. However, I do have a lot of blocked shots (Bradley, Camby, Mutumbo, and Martin) but I need help everywhere else. Can you give me advice on 3 trade proposals which were made to me?

1) I give up Mutumbo and C. Atkins for Finley and Ewing.

2) I give up Mutumbo, Martin and S. Francis for Ratliff, A. Mason and Marbury.

3) I give up Mutumbo, C. Robinson and T. Best for J. White, D. nowitzki and D. Armstrong or Wesley?

My league categories are the usual including total FTs. My team as of now is Francis, Kobe, Atkins, Best, W. Williams, C. Herren, G. Hill. C. Robinson, Croshere, Martin, L. Murray, B. Skinner, Bradley, Mutumbo and Camby. As always, your advice is greatly appreciated.

A - I find it difficult to analyze these trades off the cuff since three player deals are pretty complicated to break down. For that reason I prefer one for one deals or two for two where you can really isolate on a problem. In your case transferring your block strength to some other category. I would suggest you rework these deals to involve fewer players. I suggest keeping Francis and Martin, I like their upside. Try offering Mutombo and Cliff (who may see a hit in time when Googs returns the way Marion is playing) for two other players.

Q - I've looked and looked but can't find any real update on Rose's return. I need to make a decision tomorrow to bring him up or keep him on my reserves for another two weeks. Any ideas?

A - Although I think he is close to returning, I prefer to wait until a player is in a game before activating. That is a pretty harsh rule to only be able to activate your reserves only two weeks!

Q - Hi,

Stoudamire just became available in my league. I am considering dropping either Christie or Steve Smith to acquire him. I am leaning towards cutting Christie. What would you do? Or would you just keep Christie and Smith and forget Damon? Thanks.

-Jay

A - Stoudamire is playing pretty well and his back up Greg Anthony is slowed by an injury so I think it is justified to add him to your roster particularly if you could use some pop in assists. Between Christie and Smith I would favor Smith (I know you are probably a little low on him now because of his recent 3 pt outing against Atl) since he really does the things Christie does (except for the steals). But Stoudamire has been decent in steals to help make some of that up. Christie has been doing well in recent games but that will calm down when Webber returns.

Q - Hoops, Do you think it's worth hanging in there for Kandi, or move on? I'm in a keeper league and have him at a modest $10 ($260 cap). He's in my lineup and killing me. Hate to give up, but not sure I can do a whole lot better in the free agent market (14 teams in my league). Any advice? Thanks Hoops Steve Clapp

A - Can you give him a few more games as a reserve? That is where he is on my team. I would research him a little more before dropping in a keeper league. Go to LA papers and what not. Everything I have found has actually been positive in terms of how he is working hard. Of course it is not showing on the court. The way luck can be is that after you cut him he becomes a member of the double double club. I may give him another game or two and then cut - but I always have a chance to grab him if he perks up.

Q - I've been offered Pippen/B.Wallace for Rose/Posey. How does that sound?

A - I would want to be the one getting Rose in this deal. He is the only one listed with solid consistent value (that is once he starts playing!)

Q - With Danny Fortson going on the IR, whose a better man for rebounds: Lorenzen Wright or Jahidi White?

A - At this moment I would think White but it is really one of those toss up decisions. I think Wright will start to take more of the playing time of Alan Henderson particularly since Henderson is not 100%. In that respect Wright has some upward potential - but he needs to get away from being primarily a backup for Mutombo.

Q - David, My SFH league is an expanded 20 team league with 12-15 players on each team. I am doing my weekly free agents tonight. I find four hot free agents which don't appear on my spreadsheet. My spreadsheet includes all NBA players from last season, plus the NBA draft. So these guys come "out of nowhere." Do you know their ages and where they come from and will they get playing time all season? Sorry if you covered them in your emails already. If not, you might consider it. Thanks, Pat PG Ind Edney,Tyus SG NJ Jackson,Stephen PG LAL Penberthy,Mi C Pho Santiago,Dan

A - Stephen Jackson is a rookie getting starts sometimes for the Nets while Van Horn is out. His value should disappear when Van Horn returns. Tyus Edney must be a backup for Best right now. His value should go away when Rose returns. Dan Santiago is a rookie for Pho who might have a shot since he only needs to compete with Dudley and 'Jake'. I hear he is improving offensively. I am not familiar with the Laker mentioned yet.

Q - Would you trade Shawn Marion for Sam Cassell? I am offered the trade. I am last in my league in Assists, but have Jalen Rose on the IR. Perhaps the value of Marion is exaggerated right now, and Cassell and the struggling Bucks is devalued currently? At the same time, I think Marion will not lose much time when Penny and Googs return, and Cassell is pretty injury-prone... P,A,R,S,B,3,FG%,FT% Espn Rotisserie style league My team consists of: Darrell Armstrong Eddie Jones Cliff Robinson Karl Malone Antonio Davis Jeff McInnis Lamond Murray Austin Croshere Jermaine ONeal Danny Fortson(bench) Richard Hamilton(bench) Jalen Rose(injured reserve) Only if you have the time, thanks for your advice! Jason

A - I am in the exact situation as you - I have Marion and I am low in assists. I would certainly have done this trade before the season began but it is real tough when you see the stats Marion is putting up. You are right about Cassell being injury prone in the past although last year he did OK. I have decided to not offer up Marion though. If Fortson were healthy he would be a good guy to cash in for assists. I think his value is less than people realize since he doesn't do much in bl, st, and ast.

Q - whats up hoops-

I'm in an 8 category with 9 teams (ranked 1 to 9, 9 points for first in a category 1 for last...etc) I'm in last in assists, steals, and threes, but strong in the other categories....I have been offered 2 of the following: Sprewell, cliff robinson, blaylock, stoudamire, and jason terry...in return for mcdyess and a throw-in..(trades have to have same # of players) who if any would u take out of that group. once again thanx for the help

A - The two best players listed are Spree and Cliff (Mookie too much of an injury risk now a days). Not sure if they would make an impact in the categories you need though. Might be better to make a one for one deal with McDyess for a player who gets assists, threes, and steals - perhaps John Stockton!?

Q - the main players on my team are: Iverson, Mcgrady, Kobe, LaFrentz, Houston, Baron Davis, Antoine Walker, M. Fizer, Avery Johnson, G. Buckner, Laetner, El-amin, etc.

I have been weak so far in rebounds and blocks. I am contemplating a deal where the principal players are Antoine Walker for Antonio Mcdyess. We are also talking about me giving up Allan Houston and getting Bryon Russell or Walt Williams in return or both if I throw in a third player possibly like M. Fizer. Our league does PARSBFG%3's.What are your thoughts? 3's, total points, free throws, and fg% are my strengths

A - well I am assuming this is a very deep league with El-Amin and Buckner on your team The deal you suggest - Walker for McDyess won't really help much in your weak areas the way McDyess has been playing. Right now Mutombo has been off because he has been recouping - why not make a run for him while his owner might be down on him. Also Ratliff would be another target.
