Q - How will the return of Jerome Williams effect the minutes/production of Joe Smith? I wonder because I was offered Brian Grant and Joe Smith for Eddie Jones and Adonal Foyle. What do you think of the trade? Realize that Foyle is on my bench and I would have to sit either Dale Davis or Chris Porter if I were to make the deal. I'd really appreciate your opinion! Thanks, Bob H . NBFD

A - I don't think Jerome Williams will have a big impact on the playing time of Joe Smith. Michael Curry and Mikki Moore will absorb most of it. But at the same time I would be reluctant to trade away Jones with the numbers he has put up recently.

Q - Hey, I know you've heard about enough of people emailing you asking how to run their fantasy team, and I apologize for doing so, but I need some advice if you don't mind. I've got Marc Jackson, and after a few good games, he's cooled off a bit. I don't know if I can depend on him or not. There are some decent free agents in my league that I've considered picking up for Jackson, namely Charles Oakley, Chris Gatling and maybe (there's a big maybe) Darius Miles. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks a lot.

Chris

A - Gatling might not be a bad grab but I would give Marc Jackson another game or two.

Q - Hoops, Some quick advice for a subscriber. I'm in a Pts + Rbs + Asst + St + Bl - TO league. It's a keeper league where I can keep 3 players year to year. My three keepers currently are Shaq (43 PPG), Payton (39 PPG) & McDyess (33 PPG but rising quick). I have been offered Vince Carter (38 PPG) in a deal for either McDyess or Payton (as part of the deal). I agreed to do if for McDyess, but am having second thoughts given his recent play. Would you trade Payton instead? How long do you think Payton will play at this level? Does he have 3 years or more like 5? Is McDyess just flashing his talent and will he come back to earth (his past 3 year average of about 32 PPG)? Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

A - If this is a serious keeper league trading away Payton instead of McDyess for Carter is OK since Payton is over six years older than McDyess. Plus you get a young Vince Carter - seems like a good deal. I think McDyess will sustain his performance.

Q - I have used your advice like a religion and I am in first place in a 14 team league using 6 categories (pt, reb, asst, st, blk, 3 pt made) (play 10 have 2 on reserve). I am in first or second in every category except steals where I am 8th.

Duncan - I can't believe I am in first place with his poor season
Odom- great call
A. Miller - great call ( nervous at beginning of year when he split with Coles)
Croshere - utter disaster (especially when Jamison was out there)
Rose - would have been a steal in 3rd round, I got him in 5th round
Terry - mad early on that I picked him instead of B. Davis who was available
O'Neal - great call
J. White - he is playing awful, I can't believe I have not waived him
Rice - I love it when he has those huge games
Billups - big surprise especially on assists
Nash - steal of all time
Delk - who I waived to pick up Mark Jackson of Golden State

What should I do to get Christie? The guy who has him wants Croshere and Rice , but I think both of those two players are really going to come on strong. I am nervous about Billups drop in production so I offered him Billups. Once again, thanks for a great site. Ira

A - Your decision to trade away what could eventually end up being more value than you get in return may depend on how close the team you are trading with is to first place. If they are in the bottom of the pack you can afford to give up a little more value and not worry about the trade causing you to lose first place if it goes 'bad' (i.e. - Croshere starts to play) since Christie's steals will probably make you a better team. I presume you could also then go hunting for an emerging free agent.

Q - Hi Hoops. Haven't sent you any e-mails yet this year, but I've been following your e-mailer religiously! I also got "stuck" with Croshere this year, but I think I'm only one clever trade away from getting into contention in my league (PARBS3FT%FG%). My lineup is as follows:

  • C Camby
  • F Brand
  • F Marion
  • F Vince Carter
  • F R. Rogers
  • F Croshere
  • [Reserve F - Van Horn - waiting patiently!]
  • G Mobley
  • G Andre Miller
  • G T. Brandon
  • G C. Atkins
  • [Reserve C - Tony Battie]

I'm really hurting for both rebounds and assists and I'm afraid if I don't move Marion NOW, I will lose serious value as his numbers decline. I'm also just about ready to give up on Croshere and Atkins although I'll try to get something in return before they lose all value. Any suggestions about what I can do to improve my team? Am I wrong about giving up on Croshere and Atkins now and trying to trade Marion away now? I'm trying to move Marion plus Atkins for Steve Francis or Jalen Rose but I'm not optimistic that will fly. Mark Jackson of Golden State was just picked up by the last place team as a free agent (weekly transactions) and I missed out on grabbing him because of the free agent pecking order our league has. Thanks for your input.

A - Moving Marion and Atkins for Francis would be a great move but I don't think the owner of Francis would go for it. Croshere probably has little value at this time -would not try to trade him. I would be patient with Marion. His stock has dipped lately - not a good time to trade him. I think he will do better

Q - Hoops, We have Jahidi in our lineup. I just picked up Porter from G.S in a free agent move yesterday. Was that a good move to replace White and play Porter for the next couple of weeks. Could not get Jackson. Thoughts on starting Amaechi? We have one weak position. Thanks alot! SB

A - Porter has been hit and miss - I probably would have stuck with White another period. Amaechi does seem to be in the rotation for the Magic but a light rebounder and shot blocker.

Q - I am dropping Croshere this week. I can't take any more. should I drop Shawn Bradley for Marc Jackson?

A - I can see why you are considering chucking Bradley since he has given you only 4 pts and 4 reb in his last five games but he is still averaging 3 blocks per game on the season. I am not quite sold on Marc Jackson yet but his recent stats are impressive. It is my feeling that Dampier's knee is shot so I think Jackson should continue to play (I think Fortson's foot is shot too). If you can afford to let 3 bpg go I would take a chance on Jackson.

Q - I've been offered Cassell and Divac for terry and a. Davis. What do you think? I'm battling around the top third of the league, but I am weak in assists. I'm afraid my block, 3pts will drop. Any thoughts?

A - Think I would stick with your guys and find anther way to solve your assist problem. Divac has been lame this year, Terry is emerging, and even Cassell has not been racking up assists as earlier in the season.

Q - I have a trade offer on the table, I get Kevin Garnett, Jimmy Jackson, and Wally Szczerbiak I give Rashard Lewis, Predrag Stojakovic, and Antonio Davis. Do you know if Jackson's injury is serious? I am in a head to head ESPN league with P,S,A,R,B,3's, FT%, FG% as the 8 categories.

A - The gem in this trade is KG and it seems worth taking the risk with JJ. I don't think Jackson's injury is that serious and he has started playing again. A three point specialist is also someone you can sometimes find as a free agent to help supplement that category.

Q - Hi Hoops, in a keeper league, would you trade Keith Van Horn and Mike Miller for Antoine Walker and Scottie Pippen? This is a p,a,b,r,st, format, thanks.

A - I don't think I would do this considering it is a keeper league. Miller has potential and Pippen is about done.

Q - Should I be concerned with Marion's minutes and production once penny gets back? would this be a good opportunity to unload him? his last two games were sub par, should I be concerned? Thanks for your help.

A - I have Marion so I am sensitive as well to his performance. I looked at his game logs and he had been playing heavy minutes up to his sub par games. Perhaps he was being given a breather but defenses now though are much more aware of him. Cashing out on him may not be a bad idea. I have considered it but have not acted yet.

Q - I have been offered Ray Allen and Elden Campbell for Shaq and Christie. I am thinking about accepting it as Shaq is killing me at the line. What is your advice? Thanks.

A - The YTD rankings are shown below.

  • Ray Allen 9
  • Elden Campbell 99
  • Shaq 23
  • Doug Christie 72

Seem like a reasonable deal. Campbell will probably frustrate you a times with his inconsistency but you will be rid of the anchor Shaq puts on your FT%. It would be nice it you could somehow swing a deal like KG for Shaq with an owner who may not truly realize Shaqs real value.

Q - Hoops, With the injuries to Richmond and Snow, who is the better pickup between Felipe Lopez and Aaron Mckie?

Thanks,
Shawn

A - I would go with McKie since he put up such nice numbers last year when he got playing time.

Q - Thanks for the quality daily reports. They are quite complete, and your draft package was wonderful. I have a trade offer I would like you help me with. I have been offered Stackhouse(F/G) for Hughes and Outlaw(F/C). It is an eight category league (P, R, A, B, S, O Rebs, FT made, 3s made). I am strong on the oddball categories, and low in FTs, 3s, and points. Mutombo and Olajuwon are my other centers. In fact here is the full team

Starters

  • C - Mutombo
  • F - Odom
  • F - Mcgrady
  • G - Hughes
  • G - Payton
  • 6 - Outlaw
  • 7 - Bryon Russell

Bench

  • Olajuwon
  • Szczerbiak
  • Miles
  • Christie
  • Atkins
  • Stith

In this proposed two-way deal, I would be forced to start one of the bench guys, who I am not confident with. I have considered offering Payton around (in a one-for-two) in an attempt to add depth. I don't expect Outlaw to continue his great play with Hill's return, but he should still put up quality numbers with 30+ mins per game. I am leaning towards declining the offer. What do you think?

A - I expect Outlaw will take a decent hit if Hill returns. If you need points Hughes would be a nice guy to try to hang on to but the deal for Stackhouse seems fair. Christie I think has some potential and will improve as he plays more for Kings. He can hit some threes and gets steals.

Q - Again with the Gary Payton saga...Would you trade Payton for either of the following combinations: Steve Francis and Lamar Odom, Sam Cassell and Tracy McGrady, Sam Cassell and Michael Finley, Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson. Our scoring system is pts, assists, total rebs, steals, blocks, 3s, FG% and FT%

A - Seems like you would be getting good value in those deals. Would avoid Sam Cassell though for now. I think getting Steve Francis and Odom for Payton is an attractive deal.

Q - Hoops, Any thoughts on Croshere? Is he still hurt or stuck in a rotation? He has been awful! Thanks

A - He may be slowed by an injury still. The Pacers don't seem to be worried about him yet from what I can tell. He had reduced playing time in last game because of foul trouble. I have him on my team in a league of 120 players. But I will consider dropping at some point if he does not come around. Right now is on my bench, but I still have some faith in him.

Sun, 3 Dec 2000

Q - Will Quentin Richardson remain in the starting line up for the clippers......trade on the table is Quentin and Finley for Brian grant and Derek Anderson......I have grant and Anderson but think I am strong in their categories...what do u think....thanks as always....Eric

A - I do not think Richardson has a firm hold on the starting position at this time although I like what I know of his game. It would be risky to assume he will remain the starter.
