MORE OFFSEASON TRANSACTIONS
Sep 6, 2001

In a sign-and-trade, San Antonio re-signed Derek Anderson and then traded him with Steve Kerr to Portland for Steve Smith. Steve Smith should have more fantasy value as the starting shooting guard for the Spurs and could be a productive late round pick for your team. On the other hand, Derek Anderson will see a reduction in value as he competes for playing time with Bonzi Wells.

Atlanta signed Emanual Davis to a 2 year contract and signed Jacque Vaughn to a 1 year contract. Right now Davis is slated to be the starting PG since the Hawks like how his size compliments the smaller Jason Terry. Both Davis and Vaughn will end up with more playing time and fantasy value than in the past, but at this time it can not be determined if one will be a fantasy winner. Most likely they will split time to give each other little value.

Seattle signed Calvin Booth to a 6 year contract. I am anticipating Booth were be one of the major sleeper picks in upcoming fantasy drafts based on how the Sonics like him and his outstanding shot blocking capabilities. He is unproven though, so too high a pick should not be used on him.

In a sign-and-trade, Houston re-signed Hakeem Olajuwon to a 3 year contract traded him to Toronto for a 1st round draft pick and a 2nd round draft pick in 2002. This combined with Maurice Taylor's season ending injury will open up opportunities on the Rockets front line. Kenny Thomas will see more playing time and possibly start but his fantasy potential is not that impressive to me. I see the Taylor injury as an opportunity for rookie Eddie Griffin to emerge despite the presence of Glen Rice. Kelvin Cato is pencilled in as the starting center but based on his past not too much should be expected.

Miami signed Kendall Gill to a 1 year, minimum contract. He is projected to be a starter and could have some fantasy value particularly for steals if he can stay healthy.

In a 3-team trade, New York traded away Glen Rice and Muggsy Bogues and received Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley. Houston traded away Shandon Anderson and received Glen Rice and the rights to 2nd round draft pick Kyle Hill (#44). Dallas traded away Howard Eisley and the rights to Kyle Hill and received Muggsy Bogues. This transaction wipes out the chances of Shandon Anderson having fantasy value next season. The addition of Howard Eisley to the Knicks will make it more difficult for anyone to have value at the PG spot for the Knicks and opens up the possibility NY of trading away Charlie Ward or Mark Jackson. Glen Rice has more chances for fantasy value with the Rockets but I would avoid him because of his injured foot.

In a sign-and-trade, Miami traded Tim Hardaway to Dallas for a future 2nd round draft pick. Hardaway may serve to reduce the fantasy value of Steve Nash as Dallas looks for a way to reduce his playing time. But if less playing time means fewer games missed due to injuries, the Nash may be able to hold his overall value. In Miami, Anthony Carter will see in increase in fantasy value as the starting point guard but beware that his play last season was not impressive.

Philadelphia traded Tyrone Hill and Jumaine Jones to Cleveland for Matt Harpring, Cedric Henderson, and Robert Traylor. Traylor has the motivation of being in a contract year and may end up as a starter. This may be his last chance at having fantasy value. I would wait to see if he can produce before acquiring as a free agent.
