Late July Multi-Team Trades
July 27, 2003

In late July the following trades involving multiple teams were made;

Four-team trade: Atlanta acquires Terrell Brandon from Minnesota and the rights to forward Randy Holcomb and a future-protected first-round pick from Philadelphia; Minnesota acquires Latrell Sprewell from New York; the Knicks acquire Keith Van Horn from Philadelphia; and Philadelphia acquires Marc Jackson from Minnesota and Glenn Robinson from Atlanta.

Three-team trade: Indiana re-signs Brad Miller and trades him to Sacramento while acquiring Scot Pollard from the Kings and Danny Ferry from San Antonio; the Spurs acquire Hedo Turkoglu from Sacramento and Ron Mercer from Indiana.

Players Who Will See a Fantasy Value Decrease:

Latrell Sprewell: Sprewell just completed a season where he had his lowest scoring average since his rookie season in 92-93. With the Knicks he was the second scoring option and with the Timberwolves he will be fourth at best behind Garnett, Szczerbiak, and Cassell. He may even struggle to score more than Troy Hudson and Michael Olowokandi as he switches to the tougher Western Conference.

Vlade Divac: The past four seasons Divac has averaged around 30 mpg of playing time. He will now be a reserve behind Brad Miller and may not get enough playing time to have any fantasy value.

Keith Van Horn: Van Horn may not experience the same drop as Sprewell and Divac but he goes to a team that has a number of forwards on the roster and therefore may see more bench time if he does not produce. Van Horn may struggle adjusting to the demands of playing in the New York market (Being in NJ before does not count).

Players Whose Fantasy Value should Remain Unchanged:

Glenn Robinson: The Big Dog saw little change in his fantasy value going from Milwaukee to Atlanta. I have no worries about him getting touches in Philly since no one besides him and Iverson will really want the ball. In Atlanta he competed with Shareef and Jason Terry for shots.

Brad Miller: Although Divac may prevent him from playing over 35 mpg, he was only getting around 31 mpg in Indiana last season. He should hold his fantasy ground despite needing to play against Shaq twice as much.

Players Who Should See an Increase in Fantasy Value:

Marc Jackson: I have not forgotten the 13.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg he averaged when he played 29 mpg as a rookie. Since then he really has not been given a chance to play. Philadelphia could use that kind of production from his next season.

Hedo Turkoglu: In three seasons with the Kings he did not really go anywhere with Stojokovic playing in front of him. Assuming the Spurs do not re-sign Stephen Jackson, Turkoglu only needs to compete with Bruce Bowen and perhaps Robert Horry. This will be his chance to show his potential.

Other Notes:

Scot Pollard played only 14 mpg next season should see more than that with the Pacers. Assuming Jermaine O'Neal stays at PF the Pacers options at center beyond Pollard are limited.

Ron Mercer will certainly want playing time next season which is a contract year for him. Once again, assuming the signing of Turkoglu means Stephen Jackson does not re-sign, there will be some minutes available at shooting guard. It is my guess though that Emanuel Ginobili emerges, not Mercer, as a result of Jackson's departure.
