Expert League Mock Draft #2
September
29, 2007
I recently participated in my second expert mock draft of the
season. There were 12 teams drafting 14 players. The stat
categories were P, A, R, S, B, 3, FG%, and FT%. and there was a
requirement that the team start 2 centers. The full results of the
draft are shown below.
Looking at the results, the first overall pick
of Kevin Garnett brings up an important issue. That issue being
should KG be number 1!? Last season Lebron James was the consensus
number one overall selection but this year that player will vary
from league to league. At this time I do not believe I have Garnett
projected to be number one overall for any scoring system. The
reason is I have concerns that playing with Paul Pierce and Ray
Allen will cut into his fantasy value in terms of his scoring
potential. Also note that Garnett is now in his early 30s and has
completed 12 long NBA seasons. At some point soon he will enter
into that natural, gentle downward trend in production.
Another thing that struck me about this draft
is that there were six players that were also on my team in a
previous expert draft with the same league set up. That begs the
question, am I overvaluing this players or are they truly sleepers
or perhaps it is a coincidence! The players I drafted are shown
below with the players also taken in the previous team highlighted
in bold.
Dirk Nowitzki
Vince Carter
Carmelo Anthony
Emeka Okafor
Manu Ginobili
Andrea Bargnani
Monta Ellis
Jarrett Jack
Paul Millsap
Andrew Bynum
Charlie Villanueva
Hakim Warrick
Mike Dunleavy
Shelden Williams
The first two players, Vince Carter and Carmelo
Anthony, I will cover at once. It seems in these expert leagues
there is an avoidance of players whose value is derived primarily
from scoring. Pau Gasol and Chris Bosh were taken higher than I
would have projected perhaps because of their center eligibility.
Similarly Jason Kidd and Steve Nash were taken higher than I would
have projected for their PG eligibility and coveted assist
potential. I had Carter and Anthony 13 and 14 on my depth chart and
took them with the 22nd and 27th pick. I
certainly feel they have that kind of value so it seems that at
least among experts, Carter and Anthony are sleepers. Taking these
players though should make the fantasy owner conscious of the fact
that they have met the points category and think about players who
excel in areas of than points in the next rounds.
I took Andrea Bargnani with the 70th
overall pick and had him at 52nd on my depth chart. He
isnt quite getting the respect yet you would expect from a former
number one overall pick who is just entering his second season. He
does have some concerns about his health but I do not think he has
been overvalued and is another sleeper candidate.
I took Jarrett Jack with the 94th
overall pick and had him ranked 74th on my depth chart.
Perhaps Steve Blake and Sergio Rodriguez will take a bigger bite
from him than projected so based on me getting him in two separate
drafts I may reduce his playing time projections.
I took Paul Millsap with the 99th
overall pick and had him ranked 77th overall. I like his
potential and he has additional upside in the form of things not
working out with Andrei Kirilenko.
I took Hakim Warrick with the 142nd
overall pick and had him ranked 94th overall. Perhaps
the ranking is too high but he should certainly perform better than
142. In Memphis Pau Gasol and Mike Miller will command playing time
and he will also need to compete with Rudy Gay. If Darko Milicic
does not work out at center, Warrick can get more playing time if
Gasol spends some time at center.
